Forced Symmetry Breaking as a Mechanism for Bursting

چکیده
A robust mechanism generating regular or irregular bursts of large dynamic range near threshold is described. The mechanism arises in the interaction between oscillatory modes of odd and even parity in systems of large but finite aspect ratio, and provides an explanation for the bursting behavior observed in binary fluid convection by Sullivan and Ahlers [Phys. Rev. A 38, 3143 (1988)]. [S0031-9007(98)06353-4]

Symmetry-breaking bifurcation with on-off intermittency in chaotic dynamical systems.
When a dynamical system possesses certain symmetry, there can be an invariant subspace in the phase space. In the invariant subspace there can be a chaotic attractor. As a parameter changes through a critical value, the chaotic attractor can lose stability with respect to perturbations transverse to the invariant subspace. We show that the loss of the transverse stability can lead to a symmetry...
متن کاملAmplification of weak signals and stochastic resonance via on-off intermittency with symmetry breaking.
Nonlinear dynamical systems possessing reflection symmetry have an invariant subspace in the phase space. The dynamics within the invariant subspace can be random or chaotic. As a system parameter changes, the motion transverse to the invariant subspace can lose stability, leading to on-off intermittency. Under certain conditions, the bursting behavior is symmetry breaking. We demonstrate the p...
متن کاملStochastic incoherence in the response of rebound bursters
At an optimal value of the noise intensity, the maximum variability in rebound burst durations is observed and referred to as a response stochastic incoherence. A general mechanism underlying this phenomenon is given, being different from those reported so far in excitable systems. It is shown to be determined by (i) the monotonous reduction of the hysteresis responsible for bursting caused by ...
متن کاملBursting in Coupled Cell Systems
Periodic bursting in fast-slow systems can be viewed as closed paths through the unfolding parameters of degenerate singularities. Using this approach we show that bursting in coupled systems can have interesting behavior. We focus on two identical cell systems and use the Z2 symmetry present in such systems to illustrate interesting bursting phenomena. In particular, we show that Hopf/Hopf mod...
متن کاملDYNAMO IN HELICAL MHD TURBULENCE: Quantum Field Theory Approach
A quantum field model of helical MHD stochastically forced by gaussian hydrodynamic, magnetic and mixed noices is investigated. These helical noises lead to an exponential increase of magnetic fluctuations in the large scale range. Instabilities, which are produced in this process, are eliminated by spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism accompanied by creation of the homogeneous stationary ma...
